OPERA SINGERS (10 June to 5 July) Opera Singers range in age from early twenties to mid sixties)

Younger singers interested in performing in opera productions CLICK HERE for the Young Artists in Rome Program and the Children's Opera Chorus

The Rome Festival Opera has a long tradition of mounting historically authentic productions which are as close as possible to the composer's theatrical intention and style. Singers perform with the Rome Festival Opera to get experience with other performers who are striving to bring to life the characters the composer imagined. The characters they create make the opera and its period come alive for the audience. Singers who succeed at the Rome Festival Opera usually advance their careers to the next level. They get singing engagements, find agents, fulfill requirements for faculty tenure, get college teaching positions, enter professional apprentice programs, and are admitted to major graduate schools.

For the summers of 2017 and 2018, you can apply for all roles and choral positions for fully staged productions of “Le Nozze di Figaro” and “Don Giovannio”by Mozart, and the world premiere of “Dreamnotes” by Fritz Maraffi, and fully staged suites of operas by Rossini,Donizetti,Verdi, Bizet, and Puccini. Singers will perform in one or more opera or opera suites from the current repertoire of the Rome Festival Opera (See Rome Festival Opera repertoire list below). The operas and opera suites, sung in their original language, will be performed with the Rome Festival Orchestra and, when needed, the Rome Festival Chorus and Ballet. Rehearsals and performances will take place in Italy from mid-June through mid-July.

With the Rome Festival Opera you will sing in two or three performances of  a fully staged opera (staged directed with sets and costumes) with the Rome Festival Orchestra, Ballet, and Chorus. When invited to sing two roles, you will always sing at least one performance of the larger role as long as you are memorized when you arrive in Rome. You also will perform in one or more opera suites from the repertoire list below .  For your performances you will receive vocal, diction, and stagecraft (sometimes including dancing) coaching in addition to the opera rehearsals. You will also visit the cultural treasures of Rome to learn how they inspired composersIf you request the opportunity, you will  rehearse and perform chamber music.  You will meet instrumentalists, singers, ballet dancers, and designers from all over the United States, Italy, and at least nine other countries.
